GUEST LECTURE: MICHAEL SHARWOOD SMITH "CONSCIOUSNESS AND THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF A SECOND OR OTHER LANGUAGE: AN UPDATE"
Event, starts at 20-10-2015 , time 16:45
The Department of Applied English Linguistics and Language Teaching invites everyone to a talk by Professor Michael Sharwood Smith on: "Consciousness and the development and use of a second or other language: an update".
The role of consciousness in second language acquisition, especially with regard to foreign language learning has long been a topic that has either excited controversy, saved for some later occesion or simply been disregarded.
There is a great need for revisiting it in the light of contemporary interest in human cognition where consciousness is seen, also in the hard sciences, as a valid object of research. To do this, we need a theoretical framework that exploits such research and permits a deeper and more detailed understanding of the role of consciousness in the learning and use of foreign languages. The talk will use just such a framework which has been developed over the past fifteen years by Sharwood Smith and Truscott. First the most recent version of the framework will be summarised and then the discussion will consider the implications.
